GREENFIELD — Director of Enrollment Michelle Morrissey announced Thursday that the Massachusetts Department of Elementary-Secondary Education has increased the total enrollment cap for the Greater Commonwealth Virtual School to 1,200 students.

This increase is intended to support students facing health issues that prevent them from being safely enrolled in a physical school.

According to a school press release, as a result of this increase, GCVS was able to reopen the 2021-2022 (current school year) application for students in grades 7-12. In addition, registration is now open for the 2022-2023 (next) school year.

GCVS opens the application process for the following school year each spring. An application form is available for any potential candidate on the school’s website. To complete an application for the current or next academic year, go to

The Greater Commonwealth Virtual School is a premier public school serving K-12 students across Massachusetts.

GCVS will now have a total enrollment cap of 1,200 K-12 students, up from the previous cap of 1,050. Students are entered into a random lottery system if the number of applicants exceeds entry capacity, and lottery results are published on the GCVS website. Families receive an acceptance or waitlist notification by email within one week.

The deadline to complete an application for the 2021-2022 reopened application is Friday, February 25. The deadline for the first lottery for the 2022-2023 (next) school year is Friday, April 1. Early applications are encouraged.
